Policy Viewpoint: For Clean Skies

Despite current objections by environmental groups, evidence continues to suggest that Clear Skies will bring the greatest economicand environmental benefits of any proposed air quality improvement program, including continuation of the status quo under the Clean Air Act. Specifically, the program will achieve the following benefits: reduction of harmful emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and mercury; decrease in total program costs compared to the base EPA case, with an NPV of $52.5 billion; creation of 3,000 additional coal mining job opportunities. Based on these significant benefits, legislators should continue to support passage and adoption of the Clear Skies Act.
